I'm always on the controlling end of the camera. I never have to worry about what I look like or how my face is when the sun is in my eyes. My brother took photos today of my soon-to-be-fiancé and me. As he started clicking the shutter button I thought, uh-oh, how should I smile? How should I stand? Is this a weird pose? But I'm a photographer, right? I should know these things. Except for one problem, I can't see myself! So here are some PRE-photo-shoot tips that will greatly help you feel more comfortable during the session:
- Practice in the mirror. I know it sounds funny, but go in your bathroom and watch yourself smile and pose. Learn how to relax your face and remember it! I do this weird scowl that I can't feel myself doing, but every time I see a candid shot of me I cringe at the "I hate everything" look on my face!
Make sure you know the difference between this:

And this:

- Pick out your outfits a day ahead. It will be less stressful if you get everyone's outfits together sooner rather than later. This way you have time to change and swap out different options of clothing.
- Do some research on the internet and find poses and locations that you love. You may just find a pose on the internet that your photographer won't think of, and in return you'll get great photos back!
- Make sure everyone is happy. The best photos I've ever given back to a client were the ones who were happy and in love! They just naturally looked beautiful because they just did their thing. The worst photo shoots are the ones where they just stand there and say "what should we do?" Its hard to get a group looking natural when they're terrified of thinking outside of the box.
- Prepare the little things. For girls, make sure you have lip gloss, or chap stick; nothing looks worse than dry, chapped lips. Also painting your nails can really make a difference. Take off that month old chipped polish and put on a fresh coat, you WILL notice if they look bad. For the men, trim your beards, shave your neck and style your hair. You will love your photos so much more if you look clean-shaven.
So next time you book a photo session, don't be so worried! With these tips, you'll be posing like a pro-model.

Is it bad if I think the first photo actually looks better?
